Getting started: ask, read and follow your first story

One question in, one story out.

By Amten Research · · Product guide

The short answer

Type a question on amten.ai, sign in or create an account, and Amten opens a story: a map of the subject first, then a route of 5 to 8 short beats, each with one claim and at most three numbers. Follow the story and Amten writes a new version when the evidence moves. New accounts get 400 credits once. Amten is in early access preview: if no account is found for you, your request is registered and your question is kept until access arrives by email.

Start with a question, or with today's stories

The ask box takes up to 2,000 characters: a ticker, a fund, a hunch or a what-if. "What is the market sensing about NVIDIA?", "What hasn't the price caught?" and "What if AI spending slows?" are all fair openings. Signed out, the question waits through sign-up and is asked as soon as your account opens, with your words already in the box.

If you have no question yet, open Today. It holds the Stories of the day (0 to 10, chosen by a materiality test that runs all day) and the stories you follow, the changed ones first. Reading one costs 3 credits for most stories and never more than 25.

Sign in, and what early access means

Amten is in early access preview. Anyone can ask on amten.ai; reading the answer needs an account that is on the access list. The order of events is short:

  1. Ask on amten.ai. Your question is kept while you create an account.
  2. Sign in, or create an account with your email.
  3. If your account is on the access list, the question runs and the story opens.
  4. If it is not, the app says it could not find an Amten account for you, that Amten is in early access preview, and that your request for access has been registered. Your question is kept.
  5. Access follows by email. Sign in again and the question you asked is waiting.

Read your first story in about a minute

Every story opens on the lay of the land: the subject at the centre and 3 to 6 entrances around it, grouped by the three directions. Make sense sits on the left, the missing chapter on the right, another future below. "Start the story" takes the suggested route; tapping an entrance flies straight to it.

The route has 5 to 8 beats. Each beat makes one claim of at most 90 characters, carries at most three numbers, and puts every number beside something it is compared with. The illustrative NVIDIA story opens on "Revenue grew 96% last year. The price needs 31% a year for five more." Peers managed 12%, so the price needs 2.6 times what they did. Five to ten seconds a beat is the design target.

What your 400 credits cover

A new account receives 400 credits once. One credit is $0.01 of list value, so the grant is worth $4: enough for about three stories of your own and plenty of reading. Every paid action shows its price before it runs, and nothing paid starts from a tap on a map, a hover or a notification.

Install Amten on a phone or a desktop

Amten is one web app, and it installs like an app: an icon on the home screen or dock, its own window, and notifications where the browser allows them. There is no separate download and nothing to update by hand.

  1. iPhone or iPad: open amten.ai in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
  2. Android: open amten.ai in Chrome, open the menu, then Install app (or Add to Home screen).
  3. Desktop Chrome or Edge: open amten.ai and choose the install icon at the right of the address bar.
  4. Allow notifications if you want them. Amten sends at most 1 per story a day and 3 a day in total.

Follow the story and let it change

"Follow this story" sits on the lay of the land. Following is free. When a figure crosses its threshold, a reading's plausibility moves by .15 or more, or a new beat outranks one on the route, Amten writes a new version and tells you what changed in one line, for example "'Customers becoming competitors' is now a stronger reading: .31 to .49."

Following lists every story and subject you follow, the changed ones first. The guide to following and versions covers notifications, the inbox and the email digest.

Common questions

Do I need to know finance to use Amten?

No. Each beat is one claim with at most three numbers, each beside a comparison, and every picture has a "How to read this picture" line. The workings are one tap away for anyone who wants them.

Is there a desktop or mobile app to download?

No download. Amten is a web app at amten.ai that installs to a phone's home screen or a desktop dock from the browser.

What happens to my question if I am not on the access list yet?

The app registers your request for access and keeps the question. When access arrives by email, sign in and the question is waiting.

Which markets does Amten cover?

US-listed companies, sector and market ETFs, and the US macro backdrop.

Will Amten tell me what to buy?

No. Amten shows what the price appears to expect and what the evidence says, with at least two competing readings. It never says buy, sell, hold or gives a price target.
