Institutional ownership research compares disclosed holdings across reporting dates to see where managers are building or reducing positions. Use it to understand who is moving a price and which themes attract money, then test the business against filed results, valuation and independent evidence.
A holdings snapshot is not a live trade feed
US Form 13F reports are generally due within 45 days of quarter-end. Holdings can be stale by publication and do not describe a manager's whole book: short positions and many instruments are outside their scope. Read the SEC's FAQ on covered securities before treating disclosed ownership as the full picture.
A change in market value is not buying. Price moves, splits, amendments, ticker mapping and index flows can distort a simple comparison. Measure share changes on a consistent basis.
Read the crowd as one signal among three
Owners are one of three groups Amten reads in a Crowd beat, alongside price action and options. In the illustrative NVIDIA story, 412 active managers added or opened a position and 288 trimmed or left, about 1.4 arriving for each one leaving, with concentrated managers arriving nearly 3 to 1. Index funds are separated out, because their buying follows weights, not views.
Read together, the groups can agree or disagree. Money arriving while downside protection costs 1.3 times upside is a contradiction worth naming: it is the evidence behind the reading "Confidence wearing a seatbelt". A widely shared bet can also unwind fast, which is why the beat's so-what says so.
Follow the money back to the business
A theme needs an economic path: who spends, who earns, which constraint lifts and which company captures the value. Broad institutional participation confirms attention, and also says the idea is widely known.
Amten's Theme stories show where institutional money is moving and which companies sit in the theme. A stage or a role in a theme is a classification, not a forecast of how long it lasts. Open a member company's story to test whether its numbers support the theme at today's price.
Common questions
Can I copy a manager's current trades from 13F?
No. It is a delayed, partial holdings disclosure, not a real-time trade feed or a complete portfolio.
Does lots of institutional buying mean the price will rise?
No. It describes who has been moving the price. A crowded bet can unwind, and the business still has to deliver what the price needs.
